JUNIOR CATEGORY: GRADE 4-6

Statement of Significance:

The Caron House in Batoche is very important to me.  My great, great-grandparents built the house and my great-grandma was born there.  In Grade 4 my class went to Batoche and my grandma and grandpa said that they remember it except they fixed it up.  I thought this would be a nice thing to draw because it has to do with my family.

Statement of Significance:

In 1882 William Motherwell moved from Ontario to where is now Abernethy, Saskatchewan. He called his homestead Lanark Placeafter the place where he was born. For 14 years he worked the land and lived in a log cabin with his family.

In 1897, he built a two-storey stone house from the rocks he found on the surrounding land. The farm is now a National Historic Site.

William Motherwell made many contributions to farming, and was Saskatchewan's first Minister of Agriculture. He died in 1943.

I chose to draw his house because I have visited the farm, and I really enjoyed it there. The house is just beautiful and full of very intricate detail which is just amazing. It is a very interesting place and was fun to visit.

SENIOR CATEGORY: GRADE 10-12

Statement of Significance:

I drew a picture of my grandpa's old school.  The school is situated about 2 kilometres from my grandparent's farm.  When he was young he used to walk there and when he was old enough he would take a team of horses.  The road there is not really a road at all.  It is a dirt path just wide enough for the buggy to fit between the bushes.  The trees ran on either side all the way down to the school.

The school itself is not very big at all.  It is approximately 30x40 feet.  The school went from kindergarten all the way to grade 12.  Although there weren't many kids attending school back then.  This would be in the 1940's.  They only had one teacher at a time and most of them spoke German so the kids had a tough time understanding what they were sapposed to do.  All they had for equipment outside were two old see-saws.  The kids kept themselves busy by playing baseball or other sports activities.

This place is significant because it shows how hard life was back in the day.  Things were a lot harder to come by such as an education.  Most of the kids didn't even get an education.  My grandpa for instance, only went to school until grade 8; he got all of his knowledge from his own experiences.  He couldn't stay at school because his family needed him to work on the farm.  It shows that people back then were a lot more dedicated to getting things they wanted and to getting things accomplished.  They were also much harder workers because there were no luxury machines such as tractors and such.  Everything was done by hand.  People also helped each other out a lot more. Neighbours would come together to work on certain projects such as building a house.
