Saskatchewan Parks - Douglas

Douglas Provincial Park tickles the senses.

Situated 100 km northwest of Moose Jaw on the Qu'Appelle arm of 225-km long Lake Diefenbaker, Douglas park represents a wonderland of water-based recreational opportunities including swimming, sailing, boating, skiing, windsurfing and angling - the lake is home to 27 species of fish.  Take a short hike inland on a trail that winds around patches of juniper and cacti, however, and you'll arrive in a desert-like landscape of active sand dunes that looks and feels nothing like Saskatchewan.

Douglas Provincial Park Sand DunesNamed after late Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, the park is a natural environment facility featuring 27 km of interpreted hiking trails, including a section of the Trans Canada Trail that hugs the shoreline of Lake Diefenbaker.  The trails offer an invigorating way to experience a habitat teeming with wildlife such as moose, Whitetail and mule deer, squirrels, rabbits and more than 170 species of birds, including pheasant.  If you prefer to stroll with clubs, there's an 18-hole championship golf course 10 minutes up the road at Elbow.

Wake up your senses!  Hike a desert and then take a refreshing swim at Douglas Provincial Park!  Come see why Lake Diefenbaker is quickly becoming Saskatchewan's favourite holiday destination area!

All Reserve-a-Sites, electric and non electric, are reserved for May long weekend, July 3 & 4, July 10 & 11, July 17 & 18, July 25 and August long weekend.  All electric Reserve-a-Sites are reserved from June 27 - August 16 and August 22; non electric Reserve-a-Sites are still available.

In addition to reserve-a-sites, Douglas also offers campsites on a first come, first served basis.  This area is usually very busy during the summer and contains both electrical and non-electrical camping.  Starting on the May long weekend, you may phone 306-854-6266 to check the daily availability of these campsites.

The sand dunes and must-see Dunes Nature Centre sit in contrast to the well-treed campgrounds nestled in a secluded setting of aspen and poplar punctuated by chokecherry, Saskatoon, dogwood and wolf willow.  Showers and modern washrooms are situated throughout the park and there’s a store and fast food facility, too.  Each campsite contains a picnic table and fire pits.  Fire wood is provided.

Three campgrounds with 150 campsites:

  • Electric Sites:  90 (Near a service centre)
  • Non-electric Sites:  60 (Near a service centre)
  • Group Sites:  1
  • Economy Sites:  18

Group Camping

Douglas has one group campground area that can be reserved for group functions or family reunions.  It is a non-electrical area with a picnic shelter and fire ring.  A minimum of 5 camping units (10 on a long weekend) are required to reserve this area.  There is a non-refundable reservation fee of $15.00.  Please contact 306-854-6266 for more details.

Located just 12 km from the park gate, the Village of Elbow is an excellent place to stroll the streets and browse many interesting little shops. Businesses are open later into the evening during the summer months to cater to tourists.  All required goods and services can be found, from service stations, restaurants and a grocery store to antique stores, specialty shops and an excellent museum, complete with an authentic sod house.
