Habits and HabitatsSuggested Grade Level: K-3 Description: The focus of this guided walk is to introduce the following concepts; that all living things share many of the same needs, that these needs must be met to live, that the area in which these needs are met is referred to as the habitat, all living things have adapted to their habitat and that all the basics are met by, and a gift from, nature. Eco-LogicSuggested Grade Level: 4-6 Description: Walk objective; to understand that the sun is the source of all energy. There are four basic elements of life, and how organisms – the biotic component of forest interact with the four elements (abiotic component). This interaction is referred to as the “ecology” of the forest. Introduces the concepts of producers, consumers, and decomposers and their role in the forest. ![]() Ice Age HeritageSuggested Grade Level: 7-9 Description: Students discover that glaciations have influenced the landforms, soil, flora and fauna of the park. The walk also addresses human impact on natural environments, stewardship and conservation. Changes and ChallengesSuggested Grade Level: 10-12 Description: This program explores how fire and succession changes affect plant communities and animal distribution and populations. The walk also addresses human impact on natural environments, stewardship and conservation. Forest EcologySuggested Grade Level: 10-12 Description: This hike focuses on interrelationships within a forest ecosystem. Explore past, present and future factors of the boreal forest, including how people interact with it. Pond DipSuggested Grade Level: K-6 Description: Students discover the life histories and habitat requirements of the aquatic species within a forest pond. The functions and importance of wetlands to the forest ecosystem is also discussed. Orienteering ChallengeSuggested Grade Level: 7-12 Description: Through a series of activities students will learn how to use a compass and pacing to find their way through a pre-established course. Learn to CanoeSuggested Grade Level: 7-12 Description: This program provides basic canoe instruction-safety equipment required, paddle strokes, proper lifting and embarking procedures, etc. The students then develop their newly acquired skills in a paddle around the lake. Spruce Krew School ProgramSuggested Grade Level: 6-12 Description: This program is designed to encourage environmental stewardship. It consists of park improvement projects such as tree planting and trail improvement. There is no charge for this program. All equipment is supplied and a wiener roast will follow! Each school is awarded with a certificate for their participation. Project WildSuggested Grade Level: K-3 Description: We play familiar games with a new twist to teach young children environmental concepts. High energy and exciting but still very educational!
