Industry Associations are an invaluable tool for artists or engagers looking for more hands-on advice, support or help. In Saskatchewan's creative industries, these associations are broken up by discipline.
Visual Arts and Crafts
There are three industry associations within the visual arts and craft sector in Saskatchewan.
CARFAC Saskatchewan: CARFAC SK is your one stop shop for all things related to contracting and the visual arts. CARFAC SK offers a host of contract tools for the visual arts, including Free! contract templates, workshops, educational resources and advice. They have also published Best Practices for Saskatchewan Visual Arts which outlines viable industry standards for people working in the visual arts, whether they are artists, commercial galleries, public gallery operators, or looking to commission a public art piece or include artistic work in a fundraiser. CARFAC SK is a non-profit cultural organization representing visual artists in Saskatchewan.
Professional Photographers of Canada - Saskatchewan (PPOC - SK): The PPOC - SK represents the provincial photographic profession when dealing with legal matters, government agencies, or legislation.
Saskatchewan Craft Council (SCC): The SCC is a member based organization representing craft persons throughout Saskatchewan. They offer great support and advice to craft persons and have extensive marketing experience. They also helped CARFAC SK create the Best Practices for Saskatchewan Visual Arts (which was the precursor to the FREE contract templates) to help ensure those resources met the needs of their members.
Saskatchewan Professional Galleries Association (SPAGA): SPAGA is a group of commercial art galleries whose aim is to help you fall in love with art. They make is easy for you to learn about buying art and they promise, none of them are names "Serge"; they don't need to see you art history degree; and they don't look down their noses at anyone. They also helped CARFAC SK create the Best Practices for Saskatchewan Visual Arts which was (the precursor to the free contract templates) to help ensure those resources met the needs of their members.
Music and Venues
Saskatchewan Hotel and Hospitality Association (SHHA): The SHHA is a member organization representing the accommodation industry in Saskatchewan. Beyond providing great advice and advocacy support to their members in the hospitality industry (including bars and nightclubs) they also offer a free! live performance contract template.
SaskMusic: SaskMusic is an invaluable resource for anyone in the music industry. Whether you are a singer, songwriter, producer, manager, venue operator, sound engineer, stage hand, music publisher, graphic artist, agent, and the list goes on! They offer a Free! contract template for live performances, legal advice, career advice, a variety of workshops targeted at helping people make the business side of the music bizz profitable along with a host of other services.
Literary Arts and Publishing
There are a number of national organizations that provide advice, support and tools for people in the literary arts and publishing. A great place to start the search in Saskatchewan is with our two provincial bodies:
Saskatchewan Publisher's Group (SPG): The SPG is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting Saskatchewan book publishers and promoting Saskatchewan published resources. They offer a host of services for publishers from marketing to professional development.
Saskatchewan Writer's Guild (SWG): The SWG is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting writers and raising their public profile. They offer a list of supports and services to writers, from the emerging to the established.
Film, Television and Multimedia
Saskatchewan Interactive Media is the professional organization representing interactive media developers in Saskatchewan. Their members are involved in the development of content-based interactive digital media.
Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association (SMPIA): SMPIA acts as an advocate for all personnel related to the making and exhibiting of film, video and interactive media, from beginners to professionals.
SaskFilm: SaskFilm is the film commission and funding agency for Saskatchewan. SaskFilm is responsible for establishing a vibrant film and television industry in Saskatchewan by promoting the province's resources and locations as a competitive, experienced production centre for local and visiting producers.
Copyright Collectives: If you are looking for an organization that deals with copyright in your sector, the Copyright Board hosts links to all the various collectives from SOCAN to Access Copyright.
